Haverford Martial Arts Alliance
We are working together to train in various martial arts.
Our training sessions are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:30-6:30 pm in the multipurpose room (2nd floor GIAC).
Integrating the fundamentals of Muay Thai, Chinese Sanda, grappling/wrestling, Karate, and Tae-kwon-do, the Haverford Martial Arts Alliance allows its practitioners to feel confident about their lives, their bodies, and their ability to defend themselves. These principles are not solely useful in self-defense, but can actually improve other areas of your life, beyond the emotional benefits of careful physical exercise.
Our aim is to challenge people both physically and mentally. With this is mind we will practice different forms of stand up fighting, disarming, ground fighting, grappling, fighting with weapons and, on special events, fending off zombies and extinct creatures. These types of martial arts will be explored through traditional drills, partner and group exercises, sparring, running through real life scenarios, improvisation and discussing the intention and implementation of technique as a group. Everyone, no matter their background, will have plenty of opportunities to learn something new.
While self-defence serves a practical purpose, martial arts can, depending on the person, be a rewarding experience in that it increases your awareness of your own body. Obviously the promotion of violence is not our objective, our main focus is help our participants feel more in control, and learn the art of self-defense.
It can also be a place for students to come together and exchange tips, advice, and any previous knowledge that they may have in an environment of camaraderie. Classes require no previous experience, and those new to martial arts are encouraged to join. We intend to start out at a pace suitable for any experience level and work our way up from there.
