The Haverford Farm
Our organization is built with the mission of transforming underutilized areas on campus to become productive agricultural space.
The Haverford Farm is an on-campus sustainable agriculture initiative with the goal of informing the campus about sustainable, local food, and providing fresh, organic produce to students and faculty. We work with various academic departments on campus and other community organizations to create opportunities for Haverford to engage with the land and learn about agriculture and its role in a changing world.
what we do:
The Haverford Farm operates two spaces on campus: a large plot of land on campus adjacent to the nature trail, behind the facility and maintenance buildings (the "farm"), and a smaller plot behind apartment 19 (the "garden"). We work throughout the year to grow fresh, organic produce in these spaces, and then provide the produce to students and faculty on campus and to the Ardmore food bank.
The Haverford Farm is also meant to be an on-campus resource and a teaching tool. We are in the process of getting approval for a large greenhouse next to the farm, which will serve as a classroom environment for hands on learning. We are hoping to engage future classes of MAST students, a unique program that brings high schoolers to Haverford's campus to enrich their learning in writing and science, and we have had success sharing the farm with members of Haverford's Serendipity Day Camp
The Haverford Farm is comprised of approximately 15 interns and 4 coordinators. You do not need any experience to apply to be an intern, only enthusiasm and a willingness to commit at least 3 hours a week to the farm. The managers are chosen every year from within the organization. Intern applications are typically accepted in the fall. To apply, click here.
